I am never buying applesauce again! I’ve always liked it but never had homemade until Joseph decided to make it on a whim a few weeks ago–I can’t believe we waited so long. Making your own is so easy and delicious. Plus, you know the ingredients are fresh and chemical-free!


Homemade Applesauce from Allrecipes.com
4 apples – peeled, cored and chopped
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup white sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

In a saucepan, combine apples, water, sugar, and cinnamon. Cover, and cook over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes, or until apples are soft. Allow to cool, then mash with a fork or potato masher.

Seriously, how easy is that? I’m laughing at myself for buying applesauce all these years.

  2. That looks so good! You’re right, it is rather easy to make. I’ve been thinking of doing the same with home made humus. I don’t know why I buy it when it’s so easy to make at home.

  3. it’s funny that you posted this. joseph and i are weirdly on the same wave length!
    we just started making our own tomato and alfredo sauces and spices and dressings, and i bought a bag of apples this weekend to make applesauce, too. so now i don’t have to hunt down a recipe!

      I don’t ever make my own tomato sauce anymore because tomatoes are SO expensive here. I didn’t realize how cheap they were in Italy until I got back to the US. I like using canned sauces and adding my own seasoning, meats, and vegetables. They work as a great base!

        but then again, absolutely everything is expensive here, especially compared to tx.
        and i use pre-made sauce occasionally. but ever since we made our first batch and learned that it actually tastes like tomatoes (unlike most canned sauces) we’ve been hooked ever since.

        also, i made this recipe the other day. kind of. kevin was over the moon about it.

  5. This looks looks great! We used to get fancy applesauce when I was a kid, and it looked pretty similar to this. I have never been able to eat standard applesauce, probably because I’m spoiled.

  6. When I don’t have time to make homemade, I like Grandma Hoerner’s Big Slice Applesauce. It is pretty good.

  7. Really good homemade applesauce doesn’t involve any added sugar or cinnamon. You just use good apples. When we do it, we don’t peel them either, and we make a huge stock pot full. Also, instead of water, we just put in a little bit of good cider so it doesn’t burn or anything-after awhile, the apples produce enough liquid of their own. And then we put it through a Foley food mill, or some fancier contraption that we recently bought, to get it nice and smooth and get the skins out. My aunt even does this en masse, and puts it in jars and gives it as gifts, so we can enjoy it at Christmas or in the spring-because, of course, for good apples or cider, you do this in the fall.
