Home Tour: Guest Bedroom

I’ve planned a “home tour” series for a while and finally have a room complete enough to show off. I can’t believe we’ll have been in the house for a year in September! Our one-year anniversary of leaving Italy is coming up soon, and I think I’m going to have a panic attack when it arrives…

Actually, I’ve passed that. I had a panic attack in March when I realized that the one-year was only a few months away. Oh boy.

Anyway, here is our guest bedroom! I painted it a very, very strange color that is hard to photograph. It looks weird in photos and weird in person, but I think I like it. Or I’ll just learn to like it because there’s no way I’m repainting any time soon.

I bought this Cynthia Rowley comforter set at Marshall’s a few months ago because I was having guests and decided I needed a presentable room for them.

I put a bookcase on the other side of the bed in lieu of a nightstand. I wanted to have something for my guests to read (since I’m not interesting enough to keep them entertained myself). The bottom shelf holds our collection of National Geographic magazines.

The last two photos are from before I painted. I could get much better light for photos when I didn’t have to worry about distorting the weird wall color too much! Though it might not look it from photos, I think the room looks much better with the new color.

The paint is Martha Stewart’s Heathered Moor.

  • I have been anxiously awaiting this serious since you mentioned it! Unfortunately I don’t think our apartment is cool enough to feature a series, but maybe I’ll regret not taking photos of our set up when we get older. So much changes over the years that it’s nice to be able to show your kids (one day, if) or even just look back and say, “This was our first apartment, my how things have changed.”

Marshalls is just like our Winners here and I. love. it. Love it love it.

Do you find you miss Italy?

Do you find you miss Italy?
That’s hard to answer. Most of the panic I feel when I think of how long ago I left that life is because I know I’ll forget things the more I move on. I have a absolutely horrible memory, which is one reason I like to take photos. Without photos or other remnants, I really do forget everything. I force myself to mentally “drive” oh my standard routes in Italy or “walk” around the neighborhood so I can keep it fresh. But it’s definitely fading. Every now and then I’ll remember something small that used to be important to me–like a dish I ate every time I went to my favorite restaurant– and berate myself for nearly forgetting about it. I was 18 when I moved to Italy and had only been dating Joseph three months (and had only seen him twice, really!). There was a lot of growing in that tiny apartment, and it’s hard to know I’ll never be back. Even when I return to Italy for tourism eventually, I doubt we would go to our little town because it’s so far out of the way, and we’re not even allowed on the base anymore–it used to be our lifeline! The last time we went to the BX was heartbreaking, and it was just a silly store.

Besides the small sentimental things, I miss the traveling. But Italy in general? No. I miss that point of my life because I can never go back, but I don’t miss living there. There are of course small things I wish we had here, like the railway system and Illy coffee and good, inexpensive clementines and tomatoes. I would like to live overseas again, but Joseph and I would both choose a different country.

You really should take pictures of your apartment, if not just for yourself! I look through the pictures of our apartment in Italy a lot. It’s fun to see how our style has developed and sweet to remember back on those frequent trips to Ikea.

  • I never thought I would have loved a color like that until I saw photos of your room! I can’t wait to see the rest of your house, I love the way you decorate. You have such wonderful taste.

  • It looks beautiful and I don’t think the color is weird at all.

  • This room looks perfect. I know what you mean about lighting, though. My bedroom is a brownish color and it makes my photos look darker. This post has me wanting to do some redecorating!
